Our Therapies - Counseling Practice

Our Therapeutic Approaches

We believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. Our clinicians are highly trained in a variety of evidence-based modalities to provide care that is as unique as you are.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

A structured, goal-oriented therapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional regulation.

Common Interventions:

  • Cognitive Restructuring: Identifying and challenging irrational or maladaptive thoughts.
  • Behavioral Activation: Scheduling positive, rewarding activities to combat depression.
  • Exposure Therapy: Gradual, controlled exposure to anxiety triggers to reduce fear responses.
  • Thought Records: Journaling to track triggers, automatic thoughts, and emotional responses.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Originally developed for Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT combines behavioral strategies with mindfulness to help manage intense emotions and conflicts.

Common Interventions:

  • Mindfulness Practices: Staying present in the moment without judgment.
  • Distress Tolerance: Radical acceptance and crisis survival skills (e.g., TIPP skills).
  • Emotion Regulation: Identifying and naming emotions to decrease vulnerability to them.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: DEAR MAN techniques for healthy boundary setting and communication.

Art & Expressive Arts Therapy

An integrative approach that uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals.

Common Interventions:

  • Visual Journaling: Using imagery and text to safely process daily emotions and track therapeutic progress over time.
  • Mandala Creation: Drawing or painting circular designs to center the mind, reduce anxiety, and promote self-soothing.
  • Sculpting & Clay Work: Engaging tactile senses to process somatic (body-based) trauma and express feelings difficult to verbalize.
  • Emotion Painting: Assigning colors and abstract shapes to specific feelings to externalize and safely explore complex emotional states.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

ACT focuses on stopping the struggle with difficult emotions, accepting what is out of your control, and committing to action that improves your life.

Common Interventions:

  • Cognitive Defusion: Learning to detach from unhelpful thoughts rather than fighting them.
  • Values Clarification: Identifying what truly matters to the client to guide behavioral choices.
  • The "Observing Self": Recognizing that you are not your thoughts; you are the observer of them.
  • Committed Action: Setting goals and taking steps aligned with personal values.

Psychodynamic Therapy

An in-depth approach that explores how unconscious patterns, early childhood experiences, and unresolved conflicts influence current behavior and relationships.

Common Interventions:

  • Free Association: Encouraging clients to share thoughts without censorship to uncover unconscious material.
  • Transference Analysis: Exploring the feelings clients project onto the therapist to understand outside relationships.
  • Defense Mechanism Identification: Recognizing how the mind protects itself from painful realities.
  • Dream Analysis: Exploring the symbolic meaning of dreams to gain insight into the subconscious.

Family Systems Therapy

Treats the family as a complex, emotional unit. It focuses on resolving conflicts by understanding the dynamics and roles within the family system.

Common Interventions:

  • Genograms: Creating detailed family trees to identify intergenerational patterns of behavior.
  • Boundary Setting: Helping families transition from enmeshed or detached states to healthy structures.
  • Reframing: Shifting the perspective of a problem from an individual issue to a systemic dynamic.
  • Circular Questioning: Asking questions that highlight the differences in family members' perspectives.
